If you have TMJ disorder (TMD), you may be all too familiar with the pain it can cause. While professional treatment is the best way to find lasting relief, there are also things you can do at home to minimize your discomfort. For example, you may need to modify your diet. What foods should you eat with TMJ disorder, and which ones should you avoid? This blog post contains some helpful guidance.

Foods to Avoid

You should not eat anything that causes stress or extra work for your jaw and facial muscles. Here are some examples of foods that might worsen your discomfort:

  • Hard and crunchy foods, including nuts, chips, hard candy, and certain raw fruits and vegetables.
  • Chewy foods, like gummy candies, chewing gum, and chewy baked goods like bagels.
  • Certain meats, like tough steaks or dry chicken breast.
  • Ice. (You can put ice in your drinks, but do not bite down on it!)

Foods to Eat

Some foods that are usually safe for individuals with TMD include items that are soft and easy to chew. Try to choose mostly foods that have anti-inflammatory properties. Here are some examples:

  • Soft fruits and veggies, like bananas, avocados, seedless watermelon, and well-cooked vegetables.
  • Creamy and brothy soups — these can have vegetables blended into them for an extra boost of nutrients.
  • Soft proteins, including scrambled eggs, ground meat, tofu, and fish.
  • Dairy products, like yogurt, milk, and soft cheeses.
  • Pureed foods, such as soups or smoothies.
  • Soft desserts, including ice cream, mousse, and pudding. (Remember to eat sugar only in moderation because it can worsen inflammation!)

An Important Reminder

When you are eating to reduce TMD pain, you might notice changes in the way your body functions or feels. For example, some people end up gaining or losing weight, while others might find that they have digestive issues due to a lack of fiber. Pay attention to cues from your body and adjust your eating habits accordingly.

You might find that tracking your food intake for a while can help you identify problems and address them. Rest assured that you can enjoy a healthy, nutritious, and tasty diet even while you are coping with TMJ disorder!
