Braces have long been associated with teens, but did you know that 50 % of ALL orthodontic patients at Hall Orthodontics are over 18?  Millions of adults in the USA who thought they missed their chance as children have finally been able to achieve the straight smiles they’ve always wanted with this treatment. However, getting braces as an adult is appreciably different compared to a child, so it’s important to keep these four points in mind before reaching out to an orthodontist

It Won’t Take as Long as You Think

A little research online will show you several sources that say getting any type of orthodontic treatment as an adult will take longer compared to a teen or a child. While that might have been true in the past, it isn’t now due to the latest orthodontic advancements.

Using a method called Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics (PAOO or Wilckodontics), the teeth can be moved in groups rather than individually. This “block movement” leads to most cases only taking about 6 to 12 months on average! You don’t have to worry about spending years or more in braces, and this approach have been shown to be superior in results and safety over traditional orthodontics.

Braces Technology Advanced

While the fundamentals of braces have stayed the same for years—traditionally outside the teeth metal brackets and wires are used to shift the teeth—there are now more options than ever.

Now adults and teens can opt for lingual braces  that are placed on the back, or inside surface of the tooth, like InBrace. These go on the back of the teeth as opposed to the front, making them invisible.

The same can be said for clear/ceramic braces , ClearCorrect aligners, and other cosmetic orthodontic options. If you’re worried about friends and coworkers noticing your appliance, that doesn’t have to be a concern anymore!

Insurance & Financing Can Help

Many dental insurance plans offer coverage for adult and teen patients who want orthodontics. The amount can differ from plan to plan, and there might be certain restrictions on the type of care someone can receive (some providers won’t pay for clear aligners). However, it’s worth looking over your policy, plus many practices offer low-to-no interest financing as an alternative. Many patients are pleasantly surprised by how affordable braces can be.

More Than Cosmetic

Most people initially want to straighten their teeth to enhance their appearance, which can improve their confidence and therefore their personal and professional life by extension. But did you know that properly aligned teeth last longer and experience fewer issues over time? That’s because with a balanced bite, teeth that otherwise would experience accelerated wear and tear are able to avoid chips and cracks. Plus, it’s much easier to clean teeth that aren’t crowded, lowering the chances of infection, cavities, and decay. For some people, orthodontics can even correct imbalances in the face and jaw that are at the root of persistent orofacial pain, including headaches!

So whatever might have prevented you from getting braces in the past, those barriers probably aren’t in your way anymore. Many patients find that adult and teen orthodontic treatment is faster than before, more discreet, and probably not as expensive as you think. It’s never too late to get the confident smile you’ve always wanted—now is the perfect time!
